Not going to lie, this week has been kind of hectic, and I am slowly learning that getting acclimated to college takes time. In situations like this, I find happiness in small things: treating myself to Starbucks, working out after a long day, and tuning into Stephanie Styles’ Instagram Lives (to have her confirm that yes, she did receive my letter, thought it was wonderful, and already responded).
Long story short, about a month ago, when this blog was in its fetal stages, I thought it would be a good idea to mail Stephanie a nice letter with some interview questions. After the recent confirmation that she did get my letter, I told my mom to watch out for it while I was in a different city. TURNS OUT, THE LETTER HAD JUST ARRIVED THAT DAY.
For those who don’t know, Ms. Stephanie Styles graduated from The University of Michigan with a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre. Shortly after, she joined the first ever Newsies National Tour as Katherine Plumber, played Suz in Kingdom Come off-Broadway, and recently starred as Princess Ann in Roman Holiday alongside Drew Gehling at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre.
I was not surprised one bit when the letter Stephanie sent back was written on her own personalized Roman Holiday stationary (even after including a return envelope as standard writing-to-Broadway-actors procedure). Not only that (unintentional K.P. reference) but her penmanship is other-worldly and practically her own font.
Q: Who is your biggest Broadway Inspiration? Why?
A: I grew up loving Kristin Chenoweth and Kerry Butler because they and their performances always moved me and taught me so much about comedy.
Q: If the Harry Potter series were a musical, who would you want to play?
A: GREAT question! Luna would be SO fun. Hermione has such depth and Fleur for the costume.
Q: Where were you/what were you doing when you found out you got the role on Roman Holiday?
A: I actually was sick in bed! I celebrated by drinking Gatorade and watching the film.
Q: Who is your favorite Game of Thrones character? (Mine is Arya)
A: SO hard! Arya, Daenerys, and I LOVE Margaery. I’m hoping Theon will redeem himself.
Q: Which Disney Princess do you think you are most like?
A: Combo: Belle and Rapunzel. (Although: more accurately, Belle and Thumbelina, but she’s not Disney).
Q: What would be your dream career if you weren’t an actress?
A: Something with Disney parks!
Q: What is one thing you wish more people knew about being a Broadway actress?
A: [You are] constantly working (to what’s next or what you’re doing), but forever humbled doing so. It’s the dream!
Q: Disney or Disneyland? (Sorry)
A: I can’t, Tori!!!
Q: Biggest style icon and inspiration? Why?
A: I’d describe my style as “thorough” and I think Blair Eadie (Atlantic-Pacific), Lily Collins, Elizabeth Moss, Kate Bosworth, and Lupita Nyong’o are ★★★★★. (And Zendaya!)
Q: When you’re on stage, do you ever look out into the audience and see someone acting/responding a certain way and remember them at the stage door?
A: There’s no greater gift than being able to move someone, so I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve also always been such a fan-girl myself, so I love meeting people at the stage door! I wish I would’ve known that existed when I was younger.
